Three days is the ideal length for a first winter trip to Rovaniemi — enough to tick off the big experiences without exhausting yourself in the cold. Here’s a balanced itinerary that mixes active days with cosy evenings, and gives the Northern Lights two chances to appear.
The golden rule: outdoor adventure by day, aurora hunt by night, warmth in between.
Day 1 — Santa, reindeer and your first aurora hunt
Morning: Ease in at the Santa Claus Village, 10 minutes north of town on the Arctic Circle. Meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle line, post a card from Santa’s Main Post Office and browse the shops.
Afternoon: Stay in the magic with a reindeer farm visit and sleigh ride — many farms are right by the village. Feed the reindeer, learn about Sami herding and glide through the forest.
Evening: Your first Northern Lights hunt. Doing it on night one means if the sky is cloudy, you still have another chance later in the trip.
Day 2 — Huskies and a snowmobile safari
Morning: The highlight for many — a husky safari. Meet the dogs, learn to mush and glide across frozen forest. Choose a self-drive safari if you want to steer your own team, or a gentle family ride with puppy cuddles.
Afternoon: Add some adrenaline with a snowmobile safari through the wilderness, or slow it down with ice floating on a frozen lake — surprisingly warm inside a thermal survival suit.
Evening: Warm up with a traditional Finnish sauna, or if the aurora forecast is strong, head out again.
Day 3 — Wilderness, culture and a flexible aurora night
Morning: Go deeper into the Arctic with a longer wilderness experience — a full-day husky expedition with campfire lunch, or ice fishing on a frozen lake.
Afternoon: Explore Rovaniemi itself: the excellent Arktikum science museum and the SantaPark cave are great if energy (or the weather) is flagging.
Evening: Keep this night flexible for the Northern Lights. If you saw them on Day 1, treat tonight as a bonus; if not, this is your second shot — perhaps from a warm glass igloo over dinner.
Practical tips
- Book activities in advance, especially in the December peak — the best tours sell out.
- You don’t need a car — take tours with included hotel pickup.
- Pace yourself. The cold is tiring; build in warm breaks. See our packing guide.
- Travelling with children? Read our Rovaniemi with kids guide for a gentler version of this plan.
Want to compress this into fewer, combined tours? A Santa Claus Village + husky + reindeer combo covers three highlights in one morning.
